Creighton Men’s golf wraps up tough regular season

The Creighton men’s golf team’s regular season is wrapping up, as the Jays only have one more tournament before the Big East Tournament. The Jays just finished up the Tiger Invitational hosted by Missouri that took place this past Monday and Tuesday with a 19th place finish out of 19 teams. Then the Jays particpiated in the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on March 31 and April 1, they finished 13th out of a 17-team field.

At the Tiger Invitational, the Jays struggled, coming in last place and their best individual perfomer was senior Trey Petitt, who finished in 49th place. Petitt was on pace for a top 30 finish but finished with a score of 80 to drop to 49th. Host Missouri took home first place with a score of 839 to the Jays score of 929.Β

After the second round at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, the Jays were in 11th place thanks in part to shooting the sixth lowest total of the second round at 298. Later, Creighton shot the highest total of the third round at 307 to finish at 925. Junior Bradley Keyer led the Bluejays with a 39th place finish in individual scorers and finished 10th in the second round. Duke took home first with a score of 871.

Β The Jays have had an up and down year, starting off strong with a third place finish at the UNO Invitational back on Sept. 1 and 2, and a sixth place finish at the Derek Dolenc Invitational hosted by SIU Edwardsville from Sept. 25 and 26. Sophomore Andrew McCormick would highlight the Jays at the UNO Invitational with a seventh-place finish overall for individuals, and shot a second round total of 69, which was the second best score of the round. The Jays would ultimately finish with a final score of 880 while North Dakota State took first with a total of 867.

The Derek Dolenc Invitational featured a strong start from the Jays, who opened up in third place after the first round. Senior Charlie Bolton was tied for first in individual scoring with a score of 67. Bolton had an 11th place finish at 214, and the Jays ended with a score of 884 – 43 points behind host and winner SIU Edwardsville. Junior Koy Potthoff had a strong showing in the second round with a total of 69; he finished in 23rd with 221.Β

Since the Derek Dolenc Invitational, the Jays have struggled, finishing no higher than 10th at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate and at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate. There have been some good individual moments, such as senior Trey Petitt’s second round score of 72 at the Jackrabbit Invite, which was good for 15th place. McCormick also had a seventh place finish at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate during the first round with a score of 71.

Next, the Jays will set their sights on the Big East Championship, which will be played in Okatie, South Carolina from Sunday, April 29 through Tuesday, May 1. The Jays will most likely need to win the Big East Championship if they want to attend the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship.
