Thereβs nothing better than a hot breakfast on a snowy morning. Last Sunday, I enjoyed a delicious meal at Saddle Creek Breakfast Club, or SCBC, one of Omahaβs newest brunch hotspots. The restaurant opened in the fall of 2017, and with its neon pink signage, vegan friendly menu and seasonal local product, it offers a hip take on a classic neighborhood diner.
Itβs extremely close quarters inside theΒ SCBC diner, but it makes efficient use of its tight space with communal tables and large bar area that make the restaurant feel cozy rather than cramped. Wedged in a corner seat at the bar, I ordered a coffee to start. The Breakfast Club serves a signature roast from another locally owned establishment nearby, Amateur Coffee. It also serves bread and other bakery items from Omahaβs Le Quartier Bakery.Β
While there is a slightly limited menu, each item is locally sourced and imaginative. In an interview with the Omaha World -Herald, chef Chase Thomsen, who has also cooked at Taxiβs and the Market House, said, βWeβre taking a lot of inspiration from greasy spoon diner, doing the classics. I thought Omaha hadnβt really seen breakfast done properly yet.β
For breakfast, I ordered the saddle creek standard: two eggs, hashbrowns, bacon or sausage and an English muffin (pro tip: I subbed the English muffin for a biscuit). I got my eggs scrambled, and they were cheesy, sprinkled with chive and perfectly fluffy. The portion size was extremely generous, and I left feeling full and ready to take on the day.Β
I was tempted by my friendβs order of the banana pancakes topped with peanut butter whip, crushed peanuts and local honey.Β
While the restaurant attracts a reasonably sized crowd during the week, getting a seat during the weekend is no small feat.Β
I had attempted to go the previous Sunday around 11 a.m., but the wait time was over an hour. However, if you arrive by at least 9 a.m. with good company and the intention of starting the day with some farm fresh eggs, nothing can stand in your way of starting your week off right.Β
