If youβve been paying any attention to this yearβs most buzzed about films, you may have heard of TimothΓ¨e Chalamet and Ansel Elgort. Do their names sound like French desserts? Yes. But these up-and-comers have been two of this yearβs biggest breakout stars thanks to their work on films such as βCall Me By Your Name,β βLady Birdβ (Chalamet) and βBaby Driverβ (Elgort).
While Elgort has already starred in several blockbuster films (βThe Fault in Our Stars,β βDivergentβ), Chalamet might be the most famous actor youβve never heard of. Donβt believe me? The hype is real. In my research for this article, I found three separate TimothΓ¨e Chalamet fan websites and at least four fan pages on Instagram β and I didnβt even put that much effort into looking.Β
In light of sexual assault accusations against Woody Allen, Chalamet recently publicized his decision to donate his salary from the upcoming Woody Allen film he starred in to the Timeβs Up Legal Defense Fund and several other activist organizations. When asked about his decision to work on the film, Chalamet said in a statement posted on his Instagram account:
βIβm not able to answer the question directly because of contractual obligations. But what I can say is this: I donβt want to profit from my work on the film, and to that end, I am going to donate my entire salary to three charities: TIMEβS UP, The LGBT Center in New York, and RAINN. I want to be worthy of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the brave artists who are fighting for all people to be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.β
My 18-year-old sister, Delaney, is a huge fan of Chalametβs work and was the one who urged me to see βCall Me by Your Nameβ so I could experience βtrue cinematic art.β According to her, βHeβs one of the few men I trust. Heβs pretty woke.β
Interestingly, both Chalamet and Elgort attended New Yorkβs prestigious LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (the inspiration behind the movie βFameβ) at the same time and are still close friends. They had the same drama teacher, played on the same basketball team, and even auditioned for many of the same roles in their schoolβs productions.Β
Chalamet and Elgort were each nominated for a Best Actor Golden Globe award this year at only 22 and 23, respectively. At the awards ceremony, MTV News correspondents asked both LaGuardia alums who was more popular in high school. Naturally, each actor insisted it was the other one. Points of contention: the student council once made a calendar featuring shirtless pictures of Elgort for a school fundraiser, but Chalamet made popular rap videos about statistics as his alter ego, Lil Timmy Tim.Β
While a debate about the actorsβ high school popularity may never be settled, it looks like their ascent to Hollywood superstardom has only just begun.Β
