Birdcage board planning on big season at Qwest

It’s that time of the year again. It’s Bluejay basketball season. Come to the games, stand in the Birdcage, have fun, go home happy when the Bluejays win.

As the regular season begins for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, members of the Birdcage executive board are hard at work planning game festivities to make the games even more enjoyable for the fans.

“Our main goal is to provide something fun for the fans that come to the games, a chance to participate in the festivities,” said Jamie Prevedel, president of the Birdcage.

From small things like newspaper confetti and balloons to distract the opponents during free-throws, to the charter bus party for an away game, the executive board makes it happen for Creighton fans.

“Last year we chartered a non-alcoholic bus to Lincoln for the game against Nebraska,” Josh Shetler, co-head of the Basketball Birdcage, said. “This year we are thinking about either having the bus for the Northern Iowa game or the Drake game.”

The 15 members of the Basketball Birdcage Game Day Committee will take care of preparing the student section for both the men’s and women’s basketball games.

“We are trying to think of some fun things for the students, and we are always open to suggestions,” Prevedel said. “This year we are thinking kazoos for some of the games.”

Last season, members on the executive board for the Birdcage worked with the Qwest Center to get the words of the fight song on the big screens. They look to keep that as part of this years plan as well.

“One of our goals as a committee is to have the fans learn the fight song,” Shetler said. “That is why it is displayed on the big screens.”

Shetler also said that the lyrics for the fight song can be found on gocreighton.com.

“We want the fans to come out, have fun and show their support for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams this year,” Shetler said.
