It’s Godwin’s Law: a good rule in most discussions is that the first person to call the other a Nazi automatically loses the argument.
So I was disgusted to find a table-tent dropped by Creighton Students for Life at every table in the Brandeis and Becker Dining Halls.
“1/3 of our generation has been lost to the abortion holocaust,” it reads, next to a giant smiley face and the statement, “Smile! Your mom chose LIFE.”
Let’s set aside that macabre smiley face and focus on CSFL’s “holocaust.”
Remember: the real Holocaust was the systematic extermination of around 10 million living people. Is it fair to leverage this genocide for shock value?
Should we really compare women and their doctors, on the one hand, to the war criminals who led the Holocaust? Should we compare fetuses, on the one hand, to the tortured and starving victims of Auschwitz?
Let’s all take a breath.
The abortion issue is tragic and complex, and compassionate people line both sides of the debate.
Creighton only allows one viewpoint on its campus, and that’s a shame.
It’s a shame that all other opinions are dismissed and banned from the public forum.
As long as CSFL retains its singular monopoly on dialogue, it maintains a duty to be fair and just. It has a duty to be respectful of all positions. CSFL has shown it can’t handle the responsibility.
