Quick Hits

– The Creighton men’s tennis team went 3-0 on a spring break trip in Orlando, while the women went 3-1.

The men defeated Lake Superior State, St. Ambrose and Sacred Heart, all by scores of 7-0. The team was led by junior Jose Guerra. He went a combined 6-0 on the week, winning all three of his No. 1 singles matches and all three of his No. 2 doubles matches. He was named Missouri Valley Conference player of the week.

The women defeated Lake Superior State and St. Ambrose with 7-0 scores. They then lost to James Madison 1-6 and beat Sacred Heart 5-2. Freshman Lauren Mastro was named the Missouri Valley Conference women’s player of the week as she went 4-0 in her No. 1 singles matches. She extended her winning streak to seven in a row. She also teamed up with sophomore Lindsey Erickson to finish 3-1 in No. 2 doubles matches.

– The Creighton women’s golf team finished sixth at the Treasure Coast Women’s Classic in Fort Pierce, Fla. last weekend while the men finished seventh in the Men’s Classic.

The men were led by senior John Sutko who finished seventh. He fired an opening round 68, and then followed up with a 74 and 66 in the last two rounds. The Jays’ three-round team total was 888.

Sophomore Betsy Conry tied for 15th place for the women. She turned in a 36-hole total of 155 after rounds of 78 and 77, contributing to Creighton’s team total of 639.

There were six teams in the women’s event and seven teams in the men’s event.

– The Creighton men’s and women’s cross country teams were honored with the All-Academic Team of the Year award on Feb. 27. The award is presented by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
