Counting Crows rise, don’t shine on new album

The Counting Crows wake up listeners before putting them back to sleep with their new fifth studio album, “Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings.” The best thing to call it is bipolar: the first half is lively, the second half being a bit duller with acoustics.

More directly, the music experience first mimics a drug-induced ride, followed by a hangover the next day. Overall, the contrast is interesting, but comes off as not coming cohesively together.

While it gives the good old college try to stay young since their last album, “Hard Candy,” five years ago, it’s evident the band is getting old. The Counting Crows received most of their success in the 1990s. Besides their last hit, academy nominated single “Accidentally In Love” in 2004 for “Shrek 2,” the band’s place within current rock music trends is distancing greatly.

At the end of the day, I honestly got the vibe that the Counting Crows have run out of gas, this being potentially the last studio album of the band’s career. So if you’ve been a long-time fan of this group, think of this as a culmination of remembering what they were. Otherwise, leave them to their death rattle.
