Golfer says young team will improve over time

Men’s golfer Michael McDonnell is a junior from Overland Park, Kan., majoring in finance. Before McDonnell and the team took off for the McLaughlin tournament on Bethpage-Red Course in New York, The Creightonian had a chance to catch up with him about this season, golf in general and his dream foursome.

How long have you been playing golf?

I have been playing competitively since I was 8 or 9 years old. I was swinging plastic clubs at 3, after seeing my brother and dadplay.

Why did you decide to play at CU?

I wanted a good academic school and still be able to play golf.

How did you think the team played at the first meet this fall?

We are a very young, inexperienced team, but our young guys should play better after a good experience, especially in round two, at Nebraska City. We will improve as the year goes on.

Are you excited for New York?

Yes. But the course actually scheduled two outings, so we can’t practice on the course, but Jimmy [Zuegner] and I have played there before.

What is the effect of losing former seniors John Sutko, Matt Kouri and Michael Hoch?

Almost immediately I saw a change in losing them. Sutko and Kouri [were] consistently at 75. Now we need three to four guys shooting 75. If we can get everyone around the same score, we’ll be OK.

Do you feel pressure to lead this team because you’re one of the only returning players?

I want to set a good example, have a good attitude, just try and make sure people relax.
