Four streaks came to end Saturday night at Morrison Stadium when the Creighton’s men’s soccer team was upset by the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos, 1-0.
First, and most importantly, the Jays three game winning streak was snapped. The early success had launched the team into the number two spot in some national polls.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brian Holt allowed his first goal in three games, snapping a shutout streak of 232:44.
The Jays trailed at halftime for the first time since Oct. 17, 2007 at Western Kentucky, a span of 13 games.
Creighton also allowed a first half goal at home for the first time since October 13, 2007 against Eastern Illinois, a 333:58 streak that fell as well.
The Kangaroos got their only goal in the 16th minute of play when Brian Harris headed in a perfectly placed chip from Matt Kopsky. The goal was Harris’ team-high third of the young season.
The Jays had their chances to score and out shot UMKC 22-3, but couldn’t find the net.
In the 38th minute, junior Byron Dacy’s header went over the crossbar, providing the Jays only real chance to score in the first half.
With just under two minutes to play in regulation, senior Seth Sinovic had an open shot on a pass from fellow senior Andrei Gotsmanov, but missed wide. Less than a minute later, with the crowd of 2,202 hoping for a big play, Gotsmanov sent a corner kick perfectly into the box, only to have sophomore Andrew Duran’s header go wide as well. Those shots were two of 16 for the half, compared to one shot for the Kangaroos.
“I thought the last 70 minutes of the game were terrific and I was proud of the guys for how they played in that span,” head coach Bob Warming told gocreighton.com. “Unfortunately games are 90 minutes long and we were just too casual in the opening 20 minutes and allowed them to score on their only chance of the night.”
The Jays will try to rebound this weekend with a road trip to California where they will face Stanford on Friday night in a nationally televised tilt and the play the sixth ranked California Golden Bears on Saturday.
