Bluejay team collects tennis titles

The Jays tennis team had a successful finish to its weekend in Omaha. At the Omaha Collegiate Championships, Creighton played for 12 championships and won 10 of them.

After day one of play, Creighton had landed players in 12 of the tournament’s 14 finals. Five of those matches were Bluejay vs. Bluejay, ensuring at least that many wins.

The Jays collected wins in eight of the nine singles flights, in every event that included a Jays player.

Creighton won one doubles flight and tied with North Dakota for the other.

The women won six titles in the tournament, which was co-hosted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Twin sisters, sophomores Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader captured the women’s doubles A title. Leesa doubled up her championships as she also won the singles D title.

Freshman Mary McMullan beat her teammate Sarah Cadwallader to win the singles C title. She also shared a doubles B title with her partner, Kelsey Schmidt. McMullan was pleased with her performance.

“It was definitely a good weekend. I was happy with the result because I thought I played well,” McMullan said.

Sophomore Lauren Mastro was victorious in the singles A flight, as was freshman Nicole Nakaoda in the singles B flight.

The Bluejay men were successful as well, coming away with all four singles titles.

Senior Nikita Dudar outplayed his doubles partner, senior Jose Guerra, to win the men’s singles A title. Dudar posted a 4-6, 7-6 victory.

Freshmen Kyle Obermeier and Joe Nora and senior Michael Elson also clinched singles titles at the championships.

The women are in action this weekend at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Next up for the men is the ITA Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
