The late, great actor, director, philanthropist and race car driver Paul Newman died last week at the age of 83 from cancer.
Newman’s career spanned more than 50 years and included many awards and nominations for his roles in well-known films such as “Cool Hand Luke,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “Hud,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “The Color of Money” and, most recently, “Road to Perdition.”
Newman’s contemporaries heralded him as one of the actors they admired on-screen and off, as Newman made a name for himself in his later years as a philanthropist, in particularly by his food line “Newman’s Own,” which donated its profits to charity.
Newman is best known as the ultraβcool characters in his films, and his equally colorful lifestyle.
Though his roles ranged from a prisoner to a bandit to a troubled husband, off-stage Newman had a stable, long term marriage with actress Joanne Woodward and stayed out of the luxurious lime-light of Hollywood.
That is not to say Newman didn’t have his fun. He was well known as a social drinker, and indulged in professional race car driving.
Though his loss is a great one to film lovers everywhere, Newman’s words will forever remain.
The following is a collection of The Creightonian’s favorite Paul Newman quotes, from on screen and off:
“You can’t be as old as I am without waking up with a surprised look on your face every morning: ‘Holy Christ, whaddya know – I’m still around!’ It’s absolutely amazing that I survived all the booze and smoking and the cars and the career.” β Newman on his lifestyle.
“The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is out grossing my films.” β Newman on his food line.
“Kid, the next time I say, ‘Let’s go someplace like Bolivia,’ let’s GO someplace like Bolivia.” β Newman as Butch, in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”
“I can eat fifty eggs.” β Newman as Luke in “Cool Hand Luke.”
“I’m just standin’ in the rain talkin’ to myself.” β Newman as Luke, in “Cool Hand Luke.”
“What men do after work is what made us rich. No need to screw them at work as well.” β Newman as John Rooney in “Road to Perdition.”
“Maggie, we’re through with lies and liars in this house. Lock the door.” β Newman as Brick Pollitt, in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”
“Kid, there’s something I ought to tell you. I never shot anybody before.” β Newman as Butch, in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”
