GSA looking to expand membership

The push for acceptance and equality among all genders and sexualities will have a greater presence on campus next week during the Gay-Straight Alliance’s Allies Week.

The Gay-Straight Alliance executive team wanted a week to couple this with Awareness Week in th spring said Marie Young, Arts & Sciences senior and president of the Gay-Straight Alliance.

“It is important for us to remember, celebrate, and thank the allies in our lives that have made an impact on us,” she said.

During Ally Week, Gay-Straight Alliance will remain the organization’s official title; however, this name will most likely change in coming months.

“The reasoning behind the name change is that Gay-Straight Alliance sounds like an alliance between gay people and straight people and lacks an inclusiveness that our organization strives to have,” Young said.

After a two-thirds vote at a GSA meeting on Sept. 30, they decided to change the name. Some names in consideration are Spectrum Alliance and Gender and Sexuality Alliance.

“As our mission and purpose of our organization is written to include bi- and trans- students, we need a name to reflect that,” Young said. “There could be bisexual or transgendered students on campus who feel like they aren’t welcome in the Gay-Straight Alliance.”

She hopes a new name will let it be known that they are a bigger family than that.

“It would be great to have our name reflect the inclusiveness we promote. This is why I’m behind Gender and Sexuality Alliance for a new name,” said Sarah Jane Pennella, Arts & Sciences junior and chief financial officer of the GSA.

While GSA is looking to change its name, there might be some struggle to have the name change happen on Creighton’s campus.

“There has always been a lot of caution with the GSA and what our limitations are. It will be interesting to see if we can even change our name at all,” Young said.
