Jays find ultimate source of fun

There are some who, despite their best efforts, aren’t cut out for Division-I athletics. But that doesn’t mean that they have to give up the thrill of athleticism and competition.

Creighton’s Ultimate Frisbee Club is an option for those who don’t play a sport but still want to be active and competitive.

“The best part is just being outside and enjoying the team,” senior Ben Bashline said. “The team is a lot of fun. We go out and play hard, and we have a good time doing it. We all get along well and joke around doing it.”

One of the appealing aspects of ultimate is that almost anyone can play it.

“I decided to start playing ultimate because it was a way to continue playing competitive sports even though I wasn’t good enough for the varsity level,” said Steve Ducey, Arts & Sciences junior and club president. “Plus, it’s a truly scintillating sport.”

Ultimate is also a way for a group of similar people to come together.”I started playing it my senior year in high school after years of soccer and track,” Bashline said. “It attracts a lot of athletic people that have not found their niche in a sport, and once people start playing, they generally stick with it.”

The team, open to men and women, practices on Wednesdays and Saturdays and plays in three to four tournaments per semester.

“We’re pretty competitive, definitely an up-and-coming team in our region,” Bashline said. “But we don’t get mad and yell when someone drops a disc or something. We’re just there to play and have a good time.”

Ducey seconds the competitive nature of the team. “We realize we aren’t a top program like Wisconsin,” he said. “But we are still out there to win and be competitive. That said, at the end of the day, it’s all about having fun.”

The team is always looking for new members, and no previous experience is necessary. There is one tournament left this semester in Winona, Minn., Nov. 1. Called the Hallowinona Tournament, each team has a theme and dresses in costume accordingly.

In the last two years, the team has played in tournaments in Grinnell, Iowa; Ames, Iowa; Lincoln, Neb. and Las Vegas.

“The team is great,” Ducey said. “Our main thing is just to have a lot of fun, and luckily we have a lot of people who understand that. It’s called ultimate for a reason – because it’s so great.”
