These road warriors have led a path of destruction that has yet to be stopped.
Over the past two seasons, the men’s soccer team is undefeated in regular season road matchups, with a 9-0-3 record that gives it a .875 winning percentage. Both of the team’s two regular season losses were at home.
Going back to include the 2006 season, the road record changes to 14-3-4, a .762 winning percentage.
“I think it’s pretty remarkable what the guys have done since 2006 on the road,” head coach Bob Warming said.
Pressure to play well and win is a motivating factor present in any organized sport. The pressure differs due to factors that vary when the team is either at home or on the road.
“I believe that when we travel we are more focused with our intentions on the field and not distracted with our studies or hanging with friends,” junior forward Jeff Thayer said. “I also think that when we get in front of our home crowd, we get distracted by the amount of fans there are and focus less on the game.”
Last season, Creighton ranked third in the nation in overall attendance, and finished fourth in average attendance. The large fan turnout is not only a pressure factor for the Bluejays, but it’s a factor for visiting opponents as well.
It might be even more of a motivator for the visitors.
“[Opponents] are always highly motivated and excited when they come here,” Warming said. “I think when they are at home and playing us, they are motivated and scared about losing to us at their home field. That is a huge psychological difference. Motivated and excited vs. motivated and scared.”
The motivation for visiting teams works both ways.
“I feel that when we enter another team’s turf, we like to prove to them that we are the team that should be feared and we are the ones that will win the game no matter what type of fan base that they have,” Thayer said.
The Jays’ undefeated streak on the road and two regular season losses over the past two seasons are an exceptional achievement.
“Pretty good for anyone in the country,” Warming said. “Not sure how many teams can match that record out of the over 200 teams in Division I.”
They Jays have only two remaining regular season matches. They will match up with Drake for senior day at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Then they will head to Charleston, Ill., looking to extend their streak against Eastern Illinois.
