Andrei Gotsmanov powered the Jays to a 3-2 win over Evansville in a nail biter on Saturday.
With a 2-0 lead late in the second half thanks to goals by Byron Dacy and Gotsmanov, the Jays slipped, and with 20 minutes left in the game, allowed two goals in a 10-minute time span to Evansville’s Tyler Crawford. His first goal ended Brian Holt’s shutout streak after 722:12, which is the longest goalless streak in school history by 160 minutes.
Gotsmanov scored the game-winning goal, his second goal of the game, with 51 seconds left on the clock.
With the win, the Jays improve to 9-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Earlier the same day, the women’s soccer team rolled over Indiana State 3-1.
The Jays were powered by Emily Orbell who scored in the first half, and Shawn Magrum and Marcy Gans, who both scored in the second half. Gans’ goal gave her 82 points scored in her career, which is a new Creighton record. The only goal for Indiana State came from Amanda Gogel in the first half.
The game was brutal, with a combined 27 fouls called, and a combined five cautions. Creighton received two yellow cards, while Indiana State received two yellows and a red.
The Jays’ record improved 9-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in MVC play.
The women will continue their road trip, playing Western Illinois at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The men will play their next match Saturday at Bradley, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
