Four cadets marched down the aisle at St. John’s Church Tuesday, Army boots making a plastic “clunk” in unison as students, faculty, veterans and cadets in the military science program looked on.
Campus Ministry teamed up with Military Science to put together a Veterans Day Memorial on the steps of the church, but the rain moved the event inside.
John Regan, assistant professor of military science said he didn’t remember at service when he went to Creighton, but he’s glad his students were able to a part of it.
“This is the reality of it,” he said. “They need to be exposed to something bigger than themselves.”
Regan, who was deployed in Desert Storm and in the Balkins, said whenever he thinks of how hard he’s had it in the military, he thinks of his father and uncle.
“They had a great service for this country and we have the expectation of living up to that.
Lydia Reinig and Brittany Lane, Arts & Sciences juniors, are the Campus Ministry interns who put the event together.
Lane said her best friend is in the Air Force and has another friend in Iraq.
“I’ve been around people in the service and as a civilian it was a good opportunity to put this event together to remember people in the service,” Lane said.
Just after the presidential elections, Reinig said this is a time of change and uncertainty, that Veteran’s Day is a time to reach across political lines.
“Most Creighton students have that call to service or peace and justice and our military science department shows a special side of service and justice,” Reinig said.
