OMAHA, Neb.–Senior Day could not have been scripted any better for senior Andrei Gotsmanov and the rest of the first-place Jays.
Gotsmanov scored both goals in the 2-0 win that put the Jays (11-1-2, 3-0-1) in first place in the MVC. The opportunity for a third straight regular-season crown comes on Saturday if the Jays can win at Eastern Illinois.
Gotsmanov’s first goal came in the 14th minute after bending a 22-yard free kick past the Drake (11-4-0, 3-1-0) wall and a goalie Michael Drozd.
In the 58th minute, he was able to finish off a long series of passes between teammates Jeff Thayer and Ethan Finlay for his team leading ninth goal of the year.
“What a dream day for Senior Day,” head coach Bob Warming told gocreighton.com. “I think Tim Walters played his best game of the year today, working hard for every ball that came his way. Not one ball came down Seth Sinovic’s side of the field and Andrei scores two goals.”
The 11th shut out of the season ties this squad for best in school history, while Gotsmanov is now has scored five of CU’s last six goals this season. He also now owns Morrison Stadium records for goals in a season (8) and a career (13), despite playing just two seasons at Creighton. In fact, CU has never lost when he scores or has an assist in a match.
The Jays came into the game leading the NCAA in shutout percentage and left with that number lowered to 0.28.
The crowd of 2,882 was the largest to ever watch a November game at Morrison Stadium. They saw CU stay undefeated against top-25 teams this season and improve to 10-1-1 all-time at Morrison Stadium against NSCAA top-25 teams and 20-8-2 at home all-time against ranked opponents.
The regular season finale at Eastern Illinois kicks off from Chareston at 2pm.
