Jays soccer earns top-8 national seed

Creighton, ranked second in the latest Coaches’ Poll national rankings behind defending national champion Wake Forest, is the No. 7 national seed in the NCAA tournament.

The top 16 teams get byes, meaning the Jays will play the winner of the UMKC-Tulsa match at 7 p.m. on Nov. 25 at Morrison Stadium. “Whatever team we have to play, we’ll be ready,” freshman goalkeeper Brian Holt said. UMKC was the only team to beat Creighton during the season as the Jays compiled a 14-1-2 record.

If Creighton was to win its second-round game, the Jays would also host a third-round game.

No. 10 Virginia, No. 15 UC Santa Barbara and No. 2 Maryland are the other ranked teams in Creighton’s quarter of the bracket.

The Bluejays are 4-1-0 all time at Morrison Stadium in NCAA tournament matches. “We are going to take it game by game,” Holt said. “Every team is going to give us their best game, so we have to play hard.”

This is the 17th-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance for Creighton. Indiana, Virginia and UCLA are the only other teams that have accomplished that feat.

Creighton has the second-ranked defense in the country, allowing only .40 goals per game. The Jays have accumulated a school record 13 shutouts in 17 matches.

The Jays swept the Missouri Valley Conference individual honors. Senior Andrei Gotsmanov was MVC Player of the Year; junior Chris Schuler was MVC Defensive Player of the Year; Holt was named MVC Freshman of the Year; and Bob Warming and his staff were recognized as the MVC Coaching Staff of the Year.
