Volleyball continues late season surge

Creighton is now alone in second place in the Missouri Valley Conference going into the last weekend of the season. The Jays’ two wins on the road put Creighton at 16-8 overall and 13-3 in the MVC, moving them past Northern Iowa in the rankings.

Next week Creighton will battle UNI and Bradley at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in a quest for the coveted No. 2 seed in the MVC tournament.

The Jays swept SIU on Friday night in a 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 match. Creighton had 45 kills and hit .226 compared to the Salukis’ .083 average.

Senior right side/outside hitter Amanda Cvejdlik led the Jays with a season-high 17 kills.

Senior libero Bianca Rivera finished with 27 digs, and junior middle blocker Lauren Bloemke finished with four blocks on the night. Head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth told gocreighton.com that she was pleased with her team’s defensive performance against the Salukis.

The Bluejays’ winning streak was then extended to six games on Saturday at Evansville. The Jays won in four sets, with scores of 25-13, 19-25, 25-17 and 25-17.

Creighton was given a boost in the pivotal third set by the arrival of the men’s soccer team, who was in Evansville for its own MVC tournament.

After winning the first set with 20 kills and 25 digs, the Jays dropped the second game, allowing 10 unanswered points during UE’s Emily Wandersee’s serve.

The third game went back and forth before Creighton was finally able to seal it up, and the Bluejays ended the match in the fourth on Evansville’s 32nd attack error of the night.

The Creighton defense finished with 67 digs and 14 blocks, and senior setter Korie Lebeda moved into fifth in MVC history with 5,168 career assists.

The Jays will play their last games in the Civic this weekend and look to start off well in the MVC tournament Nov. 27-29.
