An event-filled holiday

While classes were done for Winter Break, sports were still going. Here’s a by the numbers recap of what you missed:

500

Men’s basketball’s head coach Dana Altman got his 500th career win as a college head coach with a New Year’s Eve victory at Indiana State. In 24 years as a head coach, Altman has a 503-249 career record, including 123 wins with two junior colleges. He also coached his 600th game as a Division I head coach on the same day as his 450th game with Creighton. The double milestone occurred against the University of Northern Iowa on Jan. 6.

200

Women’s basketball head coach Jim Flanery coached his 200th game at Creighton when his team beat North Dakota State on Dec. 29. It was his 114th win with the Jays. He is the third Creighton coach to reach 200, behind Bruce Rasmussen (343) and Connie Yori (285). His 114-86 record through 200 games gave him a .570 winning percentage.

15

The women’s basketball scored a season-high 15 three-pointers against Missouri State on Jan. 8. Five Bluejays combined to make 15 of the 23 three-pointers attempted. The Jays reached 92 points, which is the most points in 40 minutes since 2003.

Men’s home win streak of 13 games, which extended into last season, came to an end Jan. 6 against Northern Iowa.

Men’s basketball had a nine game win streak, stretching from Dec. 2 through New Year’s Eve. The streak was broken by Illinois State on Jan. 3. The ninth win in the streak gave Altman the 500th win of his career.

7

Sophomore guard Kelsey Woodard made a career-high seven three-pointers against Indiana State on Jan. 3. Her 27 points led all players, with Indiana State’s Kara Schilli the closes to her with 17. Her 27 points weren’t enough to push the Bluejays past ISU, as they lost by two points.

3.31

Soccer’s Seth Sinovic was named to the 2008 NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-American Second-Team on Jan. 7. The senior economics major has a 3.31 GPA and led the team with six assists on the season. As one of the team captains, he helped the Creighton defense set a school-record with 13 shutouts. He also scored both the game-winning goals for the Jays in the NCAA Tournament. This honor followed his second consecutive selection to the all-Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First-Team.
