Trends to love or hate

Though the new year is a month old, it’s still fun to look back on the fashion of 2008.

Ugg boots sparked most of the confusion. Fat, puffy and generally cankle-creating, they shouldn’t be, according to the rules of fashion, popular. But they were, at least in 2008.

“Girls wear them with everything,” said one Creighton student who asked to remain anonymous, possibly fearing female uprising. Mike Barr, College of Business Administration senior, disapproved. “They don’t seem to have a purpose. Ugg boots? Hate.”

Yet one look around campus makes it clear: Uggs are everywhere, so ugly they’re hot.

Scarves, draped around necks of students regardless of season, were also a trend.

Then there were skinny jeans. Clinging tightly to the body, skinny jeans found their way into the closets of most females and some particularly brave males during 2008.

Creighton students seemed torn over this particular development.

“I hate skinny jeans,” said Campbell Faulkner, Arts & Sciences senior. “They scream, ‘I’m crazy for the 80s.'”

“Then again, I can’t say much,” he added . “I wear Wranglers.”

On the other hand, skinny jeans were great for a night out or as a quick way to jazz up the basic sweats-and-sweater combo.

“I didn’t like them when they first came out,” said Arts & Sciences senior Anna Gacke, “but now that’s all I want.”

Uggs, scarves and skinnies dominated 2008. Judging from this frigid month of ’09, all three seem here to stay, at least until the summer and sun.
