Double-doubles are nothing new to junior forward Megan Neuvirth. Coming into Thursday’s game at Southern Illinois she had five. When she left Carbondale, the number rose to six.
Neuvirth finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Chevelle Herring had a game-high 15 points and sophomore Kelsey Woodard chipped in 13 in the win.
The win is the Jays (8-8, 3-2) first in Carbondale since Dec. 31, 2004.
Creighton jumped out to an 11-2 lead, but SIU would rally to go up by two with 2:49 remaining in the first half.
The teams would each hit two more buckets, knotting the score at 26 at the half.
The Jays began half number two by committing seven turnovers in the first six minutes of the half.
It took Creighton 6:50 into the half before hitting a field goal, but SIU failed to capitalize.
Herring drained consecutive trey’s a short time later, putting the Jays up 34-31. They never looked back.
Neuvirth had eight of her game-high eleven boards in the second half, but fouled out with 5:56 to play.
SIU would then get within seven, but CU pulled away for the 12 point win.
