10 minutes without a field goal in the second half.
Just hearing that statistic makes you think that Saturday’s game did not turn out very well for the Creighton Bluejays.
But you’d be wrong, the Jays (9-8, 4-2 MVC) came from behind and beat the Evansville Purple Aces (8-8, 1-4 MVC) 50-47.
Junior forward Megan Neuvirth led all scorers with 16 points, adding six rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots.
But it was fellow junior Chevelle Herring who was the hero for Creighton.
Up by 10 points when CU hit a field goal with 10:40 to play, they lost the lead and didn’t hit another shot from the field until 46 seconds were left in the game. Herring then hit a basket and free-throw giving the Bluejays a 49-47 lead. CU would add another for the three-point win.
The Jays led by 10 with just over 10 minutes left in the game, but UE went on a 15-3 run to take a 47-45 lead with just 2:11 left in the game.
Evansville had chances to win, but missed three shots in the final 32 seconds and committed a costly turnover with only five seconds left.
The victory moved Creighton above .500 for the first time this season. CU is now just a half-game out of first-place, with two of the three teams tied for first-place coming to Omaha next weekend.
Woodard did hit a three-pointer, her 100th of her career, becoming the 13th player in school history to reach that plateau.
The Jays bench was also key in the win. Sophomores Kellie Nelson and Kelsey Crites each added eight points.
The Jays return home to face Northern Iowa (6-9, 4-1 MVC) on Friday at 7:05 p.m. CU then hosts upstart Bradley (13-3, 4-1 MVC) on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Both contests at the Civic Auditorium can be heard on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
