The love mixtape

Compiled by Maureen Lodoen, Lauren Mastro and Nathan Ancheta

“Such Great Heights” – The Postal Service

ML: The beginning of this song has got some splendid stuff going on, thanks to the synthesizer. The sound alternates from speaker to speaker, which sounds amazing on headphones. Also, if the freckles in your eyes aligned with somebody else’s when you kissed, wouldn’t you think it was meant to be?

“Maybe I’m Amazed” – Jem

ML: All right, I’ll admit it. I like this one because of its affiliation with “The OC.” Also, I realize this song was originally written by Paul McCartney, but at the present moment, we like it better by Jem.

“To Make You Feel My Love” – Mick McAuley & Winifred Horan

ML: This one is originally by Bob Dylan. That is, of course, why the lyrics are very heartfelt and sweet. You might have heard this sung by Garth Brooks, Billy Joel or Adele. However, we like this version best. It sounds best when played on a guitar by a guy (hint, hint men). If you haven’t heard this one, please listen to it. It’s beautiful.

“The Luckiest” – Ben Folds

ML: The title says it all. This is how every person should feel about the person they eventually marry. Also, for all of you who didn’t quite get things right the first time, or the second, or third, it’s all right. This song offers hope. Someday you might still become the luckiest. Finally, for all you pianists out there, this one is really fun to play.

“When I Said I Do” – Clint Black

ML: This is the favorite of Business sophomore Luke Ulrich. Although I am generally not a country fan, I listened to this song and decided that I actually liked it a little bit. It would be perfect for the first dance at a wedding.

“Have I Told You Lately That I Love You” – Rod Stewart

LM: This song is a classic and seems to also be a popular wedding song. The raspy style of Stewart makes this song hip and contemporary, but it will be an everlasting love ballad in American history.

“This Will Be” – Natalie Cole

LM: A fun, upbeat song that makes you and your honey get up and dance. If the eHarmony.com commercials play it, then you know this song has made it to the top of the love music charts!

“Can You Feel The Love Tonight” – Elton John

LM: Made famous by the Disney move, “The Lion King,” this song is definitely one of Elton John’s most memorable. Whether young or old, any age can appreciate the message of this song.

“Time of My Life” – Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

LM: Every time I hear this song, I think back to the final scene of Dirty Dancing. The popish sound intertwined with the passionate lyrics make this song a popular favorite.

“Amazed” – Lonestar

LM: My pick for one of the best country love songs. Very personal and touching lyrics that most couples can relate to.

Death Cab for Cutie – You Can Do Better Than Me

NA: Although the lyrics may be grim, the song itself is hopeful in nature. Death Cab creates an ironic love song that is short and to the point.
