To snowboarding fans, the name Trevor Andrew might sound familiar. Andrew is a two-time Olympic snowboarder and World Cup winner. At the moment, however, Andrew is searching for fame off the slopes with the release of his debut album, “Trouble Andrew,” through Virgin Records.
The music is an interesting mix of pop, punk, 80s pop, rock and hip-hop that Andrew calls “krunk rock.” Characterized by pounding bass, electric guitar and screaming synth, Andrew created a sound that reflects his childhood heavily influenced by skateboarding and snowboarding.
The unique sound is initially captivating. The opening track, “Chase Money,” a song about materialistic people, has a catchy melody that will stick in your head but will drive you crazy at the same time. Unfortunately, the album offers more of the same with “Bang Bang” and “Pimpmillenium,” in which Andrew brags about his pimping abilities.
“Uh Oh” is nice contrast, offering a slower beat and showing off Andrew’s vocal abilities a bit more than the slightly unenthusiastic, groaning quality of his other songs. Still, the lyrics are a bit repetitive and lack the emotional depth that would make “Uh Oh” even slightly memorable.
If Andrew is trying to have fun with this album while giving teenage skaters and snowboarders some upbeat music with unintelligent lyrics and irritating melodies to rock out to, he succeeded. But, if he hopes to reach a wider audience while portraying himself as a mature, sensitive, multi-talented individual, “Trouble Andrew” was an epic fail.
