Three Creighton alumni have come back to showcase their more recent work.

Aspen Hochhalter, Ben Isburg and Antonio Martinez graduated from Creighton in 2001 with Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. Each of the artists chose their own original works to make up the exhibit.

The exhibit is elegant and dark with many surreal images. All of the pieces have a photographic element to them. The works of the three artists seem to flow together with their own individual flare.

Gallery director of 13 years, the Rev. Ted Bohr, S.J., said that all of the pieces are cohesive because they have a surrealist perspective. They are all looking for a dreamscape and each has a hint of political satire.

All of Hochhalter’s pieces are large and layered. There are multiple images involved in each work. With a closer look you can pick up on little details and hidden representations.

A unique element in this exhibit is the video put together by Martinez. His focus was an obscure perspective on a circus. He made the black and white photos he took into a film reminiscent of the horror film “The Ring.” There are flashing photos made into a motion film accompanied by eerie sounds for an overall bone-chilling feel.

When most people think of a circus, they think of clowns, exotic animals and having a good time. However, Martinez chose to draw attention to the caged animal, Bohr said.

The artists showcase many mixed media pieces that emphasize the absurdity of life. There are beautiful, large canvases that have many mysterious images that really make you think.

This unnerving exhibit will leave anyone, no matter your artistic taste, in awe and inspired.

The Alumni Exhibit is showing until Saturday April 18. It is open 1-4 daily, including weekends. It is free and open to the public.
