I am writing in response to the Opinions page, notably the past columns written by columnist Mike Gibilisco.
In examining issues of the Creightonian over the past two years I have been at Creighton, I have perceived an apparent bias in the subject material, attitude and form of the articles written in this section.
In the last year or so, I have read articles labeling ROTC cadets as warmongers and murderers, all pro-lifers as insane, ignorant zealots and others featuring such inane generalizations.
I have been deeply affronted and disturbed by these pieces.
Even so, I do recognize Mr. Gibilisco’s right to free speech.
He has rights under the First Amendment.
The United States government recognized that right long ago, and I do not dispute its application to this matter.
Nevertheless, I would like to ask that Mr. Gibilisco take a step back and examine his writing to determine whom he is attacking and for what supposed purpose.
Also, I would like to invite him to try to find opinions that can balance his own.
I am sure he will not face difficulty in finding willing writers at Creighton. If he would agree, I would be glad to offer my own opinions on a regular basis, as it seems that this section is currently unbalanced.
I appreciate the Creightonian’s presence as an acceptable collegiate publication.
I recognize the efforts of all of its writers, and I acknowledge their efforts in making it a decent and respectable newspaper.
Of course, I include Mr. Gibilisco in this appreciation.
I have served on a newspaper staff, and I know that making a paper takes hard work and dedication.
