Senior works with ‘heart, soul’

“Jake embodies Magis and puts his heart and soul into everything he does,” said Associate Director of the Harper Center and Skutt Student Center Eric Yarwood of the 2009 Student Employee of the Year. “When he’s on duty, I never have to worry, because I know he will take care of everything.”

Jacob Webb was awarded the 2009 Student Employee of the Year for working as a building manager coordinator at the Harper and Skutt Centers. Planning on graduating in May, he is currently a College of Business senior majoring in management, with an emphasis on human resources and marketing.

“I was really surprised to get the award,” Webb said. “I am always striving to improve myself, and it is a nice surprise to be recognized.”

A luncheon was held on April 16, where Webb was awarded a gift certificate, a plaque and his name was added to the Wall of Distinction by Vice President of the Division of Instructional Technology Brian Young, representing Creighton University President, the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J.

For 17 years, a selection committee has recognized outstanding student workers, choosing from a group of full-time undergraduate student employees who have shown reliability, exceptional quality and quantity of work, initiative, professional attitude and excellent representation of Creighton University, said Therese McGrath, assistant director of Student Employment and Financial Aid.

With 30 applicants nominated for the 2009 Student Employee of the Year, Yarwood nominated Webb as his supervisor. Four years ago, Yarwood hired Webb as an event-management worker at the Skutt Student Center, requiring him to set up and manage the sound systems for events. Webb then took a semester-long training program and became a building manager, which added onto his responsibilities by requiring him to run the Skutt evenings and weekends, and later weekdays.

“He was taken on as a student employee, and has been the best student building manager we have ever had,” said Director of the Harper Center and Skutt Center Rowland Hughes.

“He was eventually promoted to the building manager coordinator of the Skutt and Harper Centers, who acts as a liaison between the associate director and all other building

managers.”

Currently working 40 hours per week and taking on a full class load, Webb has previously been awarded the Skutt Center Student Employee of the Year in 2008.

He also developed a manual for future building manager coordinators in an attempt to centralize all necessary information.

Both Yarwood and Hughes emphasized Webb’s work ethic, reliability and common sense that have made him an excellent employee.

“I think the biggest compliment I can give is that I never have to worry about the facilities when I’m gone,” Hughes said. “I can leave Jake in total control and feel very, very comfortable with it.”
