For the first time in program history, Creighton volleyball beat a ranked opponent, with a win over No. 25 Wichita State Friday. Scores of the match were 26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20.
In the first set, the Jays were down 11-18 before a serving run by freshman defensive specialist Brooke Boggs put the momentum back in the Bluejays’ favor. Creighton then never trailed in the second set and nearly came back to clinch the third before the Shockers closed it out.
In the fourth and final set, with the score tied 15-all, junior libero Nayka Benitez’s serving propelled the Jays to 18-15 and ultimately, the match win.
Senior middle blocker Jessica Houts finished just shy of a triple-double, with 15 kills, nine digs and nine blocks. Benitez got 36 digs, which was third-most in school history for a single match. Junior outside hitter Allie Oelke had the 20th double-double of her career, finishing with 10 kills and 19 digs.
The Jays improve to 6-9 (3-2 Missouri Valley Conference) and move up to third place in the Valley. They will continue their home stand tomorrow night at 7:30. They will take on Missouri State, the team that handed Wichita State their only other conference loss this season.
