So you think you’ve seen every part of Creighton? Now you have an opportunity to experience yet another side of campus.
The Jesuit chapel, on the second floor of Creighton Hall, is hosting 5 p.m. Monday Mass during the Advent season.
The Rev. Roc O’Connor, S.J., rector of the Jesuit community and associate pastor of St. John’s Church, said he came up with the idea seven years ago.
“I thought it would be good for the Jesuit community to be able to connect with the community at St. John’s,” he said.
“Some of the Jesuits don’t work or teach anymore and this is one way for students, faculty and parishioners to make friendships they wouldn’t be able to make otherwise,” O’Connor said.
So far, the response has been what O’Connor was hoping for. He said one woman had been going to St. John’s for 30 years and never knew about the Jesuit chapel.
“She said it was just delightful,” he said. “It’s just a brief opportunity for us all to pray together as a larger community.”
Until recently, the Jesuit chapel was also open for Mass during Lent, but now the Jesuit community holds its community Mass at Lower St. John’s during Lent, so the common spaces can be shared by both Jesuit and Creighton communities.
The Rev. Burt Thelen, S.J., said 5 p.m. Mass on Mondays is the day the Jesuits make a point to come together to pray as a community. As the pastor of St. John’s Parish, he said he was happy to see this Mass opened up once a year to the larger spiritual community on campus.
“I think people like this,” he said. “It gives them a different presider every week and a chance to meet some Jesuits. So far, it’s been pretty well attended.”
“We’ve even had to bring in some extra chairs.”
Other than the usual Mass said on weeknights, one change is the addition of music. During Advent, O’Connor brings his guitar to the chapel to lead the congregation in song.
“This is just a nice way to celebrate the season,” Thelen said.
