Omaha police responded to a shooting outside the D.J. Sokol Arena and Ryan Center Thursday around 8:30 p.m.
The incident began when a fight broke out in the D.J. Sokol Arena and Ryan Center during a high school basketball game between Omaha North and Benson. The fight continued outside, resulting in the shooting.
Eye witness accounts report two individuals being taken away in handcuffs. Trevaughn Brown, 16, was injured and taken to Creighton University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
No Creighton members were involved in the fight or the shooting.
About 20 police cars responded to the east side of campus and conducted an investigation of the scene.
Creighton’s campus was briefly locked down, including Opus Hall, the Harper Center and the D.J. Sokol Arena and Ryan Center. Attendees at the game were not allowed to leave the arena until police cleared the scene.
A police barricade blocked off 19th Street, and police tape blocked both south entrances to Opus Hall until 10:30 p.m.
The Harper Center remained closed until Friday morning and Public Safety released a CU Alert notifying students of the situation.
Creighton students in Opus Hall were forced to remain in the building regardless of the reason for leaving.
“The situation was more confusing than anything,” Business junior Alec Denne said. “We were having an ‘Office’ viewing party when it happened, and my friend Britt tried to leave for Jays for Christ. Public Safety blocked her from leaving Opus.”
Students who were outside while police were securing the scene were told to go into their buildings and stay indoors while police investigated.
“I came home from choir and saw all the cop cars,” Business senior Lara Klein said. “I went to 20th St. and overheard a police radio that said ‘shots fired.’ The cops told us all to go inside to be safe.”
