Bluejays claw past Salukis

Antoine Young sank a lay-up with 1.3 seconds remaining, helping Creighton to a two point win over Southern Illinois Wednesday night at Qwest Center-Omaha. With the win, the Bluejays improve to 8-9 on the season and 3-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while the Salukis lost their fourth straight falling to 9-6 and 2-4 in conference play.

Creighton head coach Dana Altman recorded victory number 400 of his Division 1 career that include 317 at Creighton, 68 at Kansas State and 15 at Marshall.

The Bluejays led a majority of the first half which included six ties and 10 lead changes.

Justin Carter had 19 points and seven rebounds. Ashford added 10 points in his return to the starting line-up. Young finished with seven points and five assists. Creighton won the battle on the boards 39-34 and shot 40.4 percent for the contest.

Saluki freshman Gene Teague lead the team with 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Kevin Dillard had 12 points and six assists. Southern Illinois shot 47.3 percent from the field for the game.

Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 4 pm for a nationally-televised game against Wichita State. The game can be heard on KXSP (Big Sports 590 AM) and seen on ESPN2.
