Creighton Students Union is changing but the student body may not notice the immediate effects. The union has run as a corporation for 85 years, but that’s all coming to a close this semester.
Since 1925, CSU has employed outside sources to conduct business, such as accountants and lawyers. The extra entities involved with CSU affairs created a rift between Creighton students and the Creighton administration.
Dillon Miskimins, CSU president and Business senior, said the the CSU executives’ focus had shifted away from the students to business matters.
“Over time, it’s just developed into more work than what the benefits are to the students,” Miskimins said. “Besides fees, it comes down to time as well. There’s hardly any time to run a corporation and serve the student body.
“The goal is to just free up the time of the executives to focus and refocus on CSU’s mission to further the cultural and educational environment on campus for the students.”
The plan to dissolve the corporation came last year and in a Dec. 3 vote of 163-7, Creighton Students Union ended the corporate status starting this year.
“It’s been a process. Most of the credit is due to last year’s executive team,” Miskimins said. “They drafted up a memorandum of understanding that ensures the autonomy between the Creighton Students Union and the university without the corporate structure.”
Miskimins said students will notice the effects of the change through an increased involvement from the CSU executive team and their funded organizations.
“The only consequence to the students is a positive one,” he said. “The fact that it frees up our time and resources to further the mission saves literally thousands of dollars that we are able to turn back to the students.”
The structure of the Creighton Students Union will remain the same, with the same student body structure and flow of funds for CSU events and organizations. The only difference will be between CSU and other outside sources.
As of their deadline, the attorneys handling the dissolution of the corporate Creighton Students Union planned on finalizing all paperwork this week.
