Creighton mourns the loss of fellow student Sydney Jones

At 10 a.m. Thursday morning, Sydney Jones passed away at Creighton University Medical Center while surrounded by friends and family.

Jones, a Creighton University Business senior from Sioux Falls, S.D., was transported to CUMC on Monday after suffering from a pulmonary embolism and complications from the surgery that followed. She was placed on a heart-lung assist machine and a catheter to decrease her potassium levels.

Around 3 a.m. on Thursday, Jones’ potassium levels began to rise again and doctors decided against using another catheter. Doctors said the high level of stress on her organs had caused significant damage.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 7 from 5 p.m.- 7 p.m. at St. Lambert’s Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, S.D., followed by Christian Wake services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. at St. Lambert’s.

The family currently remains in Omaha and is requesting memorials to be sent to: Sydney Anne Jones Memorial Fund, Catholic Foundation of Eastern South Dakota, 523 N Duluth Ave Sioux Falls, SD 57104.

“Many at the University, students, faculty and staff, have been praying for her and her family,” said Dr. John Cernech, vice president of student services. “We are all saddened by the loss of someone so young and talented.”
