Cross Country season kicks off with CU/UNO Invitational

The Creighton Cross Country teams kicked off the start of their season Saturday at the CU/UNO Invitational with mixed results. The women’s team took third place in the six team meet with the help of strong finishes by freshmen Hannah Krumreich and Slaine Kelly. Creighton also took fourth place with only four of the six schools fielding teams in the men’s event. One bright spot for the men was the sixth place finish by junior Chris Culhane.

“We looked how we needed to on Sept. 4,” said second-year head coach Chas Davis. “Considering the amount of inexperience, it was impressive to see the energy they had. All things considered, I was pretty happy with the results of the meet.”

With several key men’s runners out of the race on Saturday, the Bluejays managed only one runner in the top 20. Injuries to junior Casey Jergenson and freshman Bill Toohey contributed to the lack of top finishers for the Bluejays.

“We had too big of a gap between our first place and second place finisher,” Davis said. “I think the guys we kept out can definitely fill that gap. Some of our top guys are dealing with small things, and they should be ready pretty soon.”

Creighton hopes to have their top runners back for the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. on Sept. 18.
