So the world is going to end eventually (if not soon), right? Or at least people can generally agree that the time for humans on this Earth is coming to a close? Even if not, it’s probably best to be prepared for the future and whatever that may entail.
Jon Stewart and his crew on “The Daily Show” do just this in their second “textbook:” “Earth: A Visitor’s Guide to the Human Race.” The book is laid out as an account of the human race for the eventual discovering of Earth by extraterrestrials.
The book introduces the aliens, the once-dominant species on Earth, in case humans won’t be there to welcome them. Starting from a basic idea of how the Earth was formed, the book describes how humans came about in the evolutionary chain of being, as well as the history of man from cradle to grave. It is filled with witty one-liners and gut-busting interpretations of the human race.
The book goes into several aspects of the human race including biology, history, theology, philosophy and political science, which should interest a wide range of readers.
Stewart and his staff explain and introduce concepts in a way that will have readers finding themselves laughing out loud, even in the quiet library. And don’t worry about the jokes being too over-your-head, as a few of them appear in “America,” the first book by “The Daily Show.”
This book does a nice job of balancing deep intellectual jokes with toilet humor, making laughs of all varieties on every page. It should prove engaging to all audiences with some of its social commentary and give each reader a slightly different outlook on everything you learned in your introductory history and science classes.
I would recommend reading this book over a longer period of time, as it provides a great source of entertainment while enjoying morning coffee or even before bed each night. It isn’t organized in formal chapters, so it’s a great book to read on the fly. Readers can stop almost anywhere in the book and won’t have to worry about losing their place.
For those who are looking for an entertaining read but don’t have a lot of time, I recommend this book. With wonderful puns on pop culture, history and politics, this book will have all ideologies enjoying a good laugh.
