A new trend is taking Creighton’s campus by storm, and this time it’s not freshmen lanyards. Anonymous gossip websites, such as CollegeACB, have managed to cause quite a stir among Creighton’s population.
The topics range from the harmless discussion of everyone’s favorite first-string Omaha Nighthawks quaterback to highly personal attacks toward other students.
This is one trend that needs to be thrown out the window.
The creators of the troublesome website would have you believe that its focus is to provide a forum for student discussion free from criticism, but in practice, it functions as little more than a virtual bathroom wall.
Some may argue that this, like many other such trends in the past, will become obsolete in time, but this avoids the issue.
At the least, websites such as this make Creighton University look like a hive of scum and villany as we remain Nebraska’s only school to actively use the website. At the worst, however, comments and personal attacks to one’s reputation can affect someone well beyond Creighton.
In light of the death of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi, it’s more evident than ever the unintentional effects online gossip can have. It’s imperative that the student body shuns activity on the website, and encourages administrators to limit access.
Much more than our reputation is at risk as long as this continues, and the sooner we realize that we must stop such petty gossip, the better off we’ll be.
