The ladies of Kappa Kappa Gamma greeted the cool autumn weather with open arms during their annual philanthropy event, the KKG Chili Cook-Off.
The popular philanthropy event led crowds to lower St. John’s to get out of the cold and to check out the heated competition. The event allowed the Creighton community to get involved in two different ways. The first way was to create chili recipe and enter it into the competition for $30. Those who are not as culinarily gifted could pay $10 to sample the competitors recipes, receive a t-shirt and also get two
raffle tickets.
All proceeds from the event went to the Children’s Respite Care Center, a local, independent, non-profit organization that focuses on the development of children with special needs. The Children’s Respite Care Center is Kappa’s community service partner. They also do many other events benefiting the center throughout the year, and many members of the sorority volunteer there on a regular basis.
“The support from our fellow Creighton community made the cook-off a huge success,” said Arts & Sciences junior Katey Hanson said.
The chilly weather combined with the great cause led to many members of the Creighton community eager to taste different kinds of chili and baked goods.
“I liked the warm atmosphere and the welcoming spirit,” said Business junior Sam Corey. “I didn’t try the chili but it smelled really good, and the homemade baked goods were delicious. It was a good place to go to relax, talk, take a break and to raise money for a good cause.”
It was a day enjoyed by the women putting on the event, the competitors and everyone
in attendance.
“Spending time with all of my sisters was definitely my favorite part of the day,”
Hanson said.
