The Center for Student Integrity has suspended the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity from campus until 2015, after finding the organization to be in violation of two code of conduct guidelines.
The fraternity was found responsible for conduct unbecoming of a Creighton student/ organization and violation of published or other existing University rules. Both of the violations stem from alcohol related incidents.
The original allegations that forced an investigation by CSI, hazing and providing alcohol to minors, were disproven throughoutΒ the hearing process, however.
Assistant director of the Center for StudentΒ Activity Matt Sullivan said the process that Pike went through is the same as any Greek organization goes through once CSI has been informed of a potential violation.
β[In dealing with the allegations against a greek organization] CSI conducts an investigation based on the information initially provided, obtaining information and meeting with organization executives, members, other students and staff members, as necessary.β
The information that CSI gathered warranted a hearing process to occur.
βThrough the investigation and hearing process, [the original] allegations were provenΒ false,β Pike president Business junior Ryan Ricke said. βWhile we were not found responsible for the original allegations, we were found responsible to an extent.β
One violation was found in the form of alcohol being present in an of age active memberβs room during bid acceptance. Another violation was found in alcohol being present in Pikeβs new member retreat.
βAlcohol was found and confiscated by our New Member Educators,β Ricke said. βHowever, they failed to determine who the alcohol belonged to. When no one came forward to claim responsibility, the entire class was asked to perform 10 community service hours. The University Committee determined that Pi
Kappa Alpha did not do its due diligence and that community service was not an acceptable form of punishment.β
Along with being suspended from campus until 2015, Pike is not allowed to host any other philanthropy event, organize any type of event, wear letters on campus, participate in recruitment or hold any meetings as a chapter. Pike is also in the process of removing the Greek letters from their fraternity house.
βWhile our situation is not ideal, the support from our members, alumni, internationals, community and departments of our University have made this process bearable,β Ricke said.
