Organizations raise awareness at red flag event

The organization To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) recently held a red flag event on Creighton’s campus, which highlighted suicide awareness and prevention.

With the help of Peer Education At Creighton (PEAC), these organizations planted red flags on the mall lawn that symbolized a suicide that had taken place each hour, according to national statistics.

β€œPEAC had the honor of helping TWLOHA with this event,” PEAC member and Arts & Sciences junior Megan Boland said. β€œThe partnership between the student organizations made perfect sense as TWLOHA focuses on individuals struggling with depression, addiction and suicide, and a major facet of PEAC is mental health and relationships with others.”

According to Boland, most college students are aware these problems exist but may not be aware how many people are affected.

β€œI believe the event served to inspire

and encourage those struggling or who know someone who is struggling to seek help,” Boland said.

Arts & Sciences senior and co-president of TWLOHA Patrick Miranda was pleased with the event.

β€œThis kind of event is really difficult to do,” Miranda said. β€œThe members and supporters of TWLOHA understand how difficult wrestling with the topic of suicide is. We were worried that the event might be triggering, but we had resources there and I think it went well. Quite a few people said, β€˜This is cool. Thank you for doing this.’ I think those comments make it worth it.”

By the end of the event, there were 100 red flags encompassing the area, dedicated to friends and loved ones students had lost.

Miranda encourages students to talk to their friends and have real conversations, to always know resources and to know where to get help.

β€œOur hope is to replace silence and shame with communities of hope and help,” Miranda said.
