Students shave heads for cancer awareness

This Sunday, the St. Baldrick’s foundation will come to Creighton University.

St. Baldrick’s is a foundation whose primary goal is to provide funding for research to find cures for childhood cancer. St Baldrick’s shaves the heads of willing participants, an action that both raises awareness and provides the opportunity for donation. Events through this foundation are held around the country at various times of the year in businesses and schools.

Arts & Sciences junior Jackie Greene is not only helping bring this event to Creighton but is also one of the 16 participants who will shave their heads.

“Because I am so passionate about the cause, I have decided to host this event for the first time at Creighton,” Greene said. “It is so important to me that I have been given the opportunity to be in solidarity with all of the children who have lost their hair to cancer treatment, and that is why I am shaving my head.”

Arts & Sciences junior Emma Hayek has been helping Greene with this event and thinks the courage and dedication of all the shavees, especially the women, is heartwarming.

“As a woman, I can’t imagine shaving my head,” Hayek said. “Superficial as it is, women hold their personal identity and beauty very near to how their hair looks. It reminds us all what is truly valuable, and it certainly isn’t hair.”

Cancer hits close to home for Greene. She was first exposed to cancer in fifth grade when a younger student passed away from Leukemia. Since then she has had a handful of family and friends battle cancer, including her father. For this event, she is honoring principle people in her life, such as a girl who passed away from Rhabdomyosarcoma last year.

“I would love to honor more children that have been affected by childhood cancer that Creighton’s students, faculty or members of the Omaha community personally know,” Greene said. “It means so much when there is a personal connection, and therefore I am happy to have local families included in the event.”
