Athletes, students spread warmth and holiday cheer

β€˜Tis the season for helping out others, especially when the weather turns colder. While here at Creighton students are lucky enough to go inside to heated buildings when it gets cold or bundle up in coats and gloves, others less fortunate in Omaha are not as lucky. The athletic department is trying to help fix that.

The athletic department is having a coat drive to help out The Heartland Ministry Center. They are working in conjunction with First National Bank to help bring coats, gloves, hats and many more warm clothes needed to people in Omaha.

β€œWe feel it is our duty to help out,” Arts & Sciences senior Christina Moore said.

Moore is helping in leading the program and getting other students involved around campus.

The drive got started because of people in the athletic department who work with First National Bank and wanted to help them out with giving coats to The Heartland Ministry.

β€œFirst National Bank is so tied in with Creighton Athletics. Kevin Thompson, VP at First National is on the Board at Heart Ministry Center and President Dan O’Neill and his wife Alison are Chairs of the Bluejay Jamboree,” Moore said.

It is not just the athletic department thatΒ can help out. All students can participate in giving coats to those in need right here in the Metro area.

β€œWe are trying to reach out to other campus organizations,” said John Huebscher, who works in the academic learning center for athletes.

Students can find boxes labeled β€œcoat drive” in different locations around campus to drop off items. They are all over campus so one will not have to worry about walking across campus to donate and more locations will come soon.

β€œDonation bins are located in the Athletic Offices in the Vinardi Center/Old Gym or can be brought to the Ryan Center,” Moore said. β€œHopefully there will be bins in Skutt and Harper soon.”

The coat drive has been going on for awhile with hopes that by the long period of time would mean more clothes brought in by students. The drive will continue up to the Christmas break.

β€œThere was a big push for after thanksgiving,” Huebscher said.

The main reason for that was because students could go home and bring back old coats that they no longer needed or that did not fit them anymore. Old winter accessories will be accepted as long as they are still in good shape.
