Creighton makes top world ranking

Celebration is in accordance; we can add another bullet point to the list of our achievements. Beside being the #1 university in the Midwest, Creighton has gained the title of one of the top universities in the world.

Β

Creighton’s world rank fits into the 301-350 category, according to Times Higher Education (THE).

Β

Sponsored by the Thomson Reuters Corporation, the Times Higher Education World university rankings for the 2012-2013 school year judges universities, on a global level, based upon how they fulfill their chief and principal mission, or central purpose of existence. There is a focus on four aspects of college and university life: they are β€œteaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook” states Reuters. In order to provide readers with a genuine, comprehensive and impartial comparison, the ranking uses 13 different criterions that are factored into the six main categories that schools are given a rank based on. In addition to an overall score, the 5 subcategories include teaching, international outlook, industry outcome, research and citations.

Β

In order to vouch for their credibility, Reuters says in their statement that the information available is β€œtrusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.”

Β

While the overall score is withheld by THE, the teaching category scored a 42.4 with a 26.0 score for international outlook. The industry income category indicated, β€œno data supplied”, while research achieved 9.3 and the higher score of 61.0 was assigned to the β€œcitations” category. It was also mentioned that β€œmore than 60,000 Creighton alumni live in 89 countries: the largest numbers that reside outside the US are based in Canada, Japan and Malaysia.”

Β

After ranking the first 200 universities, the remaining ranks are grouped together initially in groups of 25, and from the 300th rank onwards, in groups of 50.

Β

β€œIt’s an important achievement, but there is still more room for improvement,” said Sally Campbell, junior at Creighton University.

Β

Maeve Cardwell, freshman at Creighton, harbored a different opinion. β€œConsidering how many schools there are internationally, having a teaching staff that is rated that high, makes me believe that my intellect is in good hands. I feel like my education is being shaped and molded by some impressive individuals,” said Cardwell.
