The Creighton womenβs basketball team defeated the University of Houston Cougars 75-54 Saturday afternoon to pick up its third-straight win and improve to 5-2 on the season.
Hot shooting from the Bluejays to open the second half led to a 10-2 Bluejay run that eliminated Houstonβs 33-25 halftime lead. Following a Houston free throw, Creighton scored 11 unanswered points – the last six of which came on two 3-pointers from sophomore guard Sammy Jensen – to give the Bluejays a comfortable 10-point lead.
Sammy Jensen, the younger sister of senior guard Ally Jensen, scored a career-high eight points. Another player setting a career-high in scoring was junior guard/forward McKenzie Fujan. Fujan finished with 20 points, 17 of which were scored in the second half.
The depth of Creightonβs bench, a point of emphasis for head coach Jim Flanery this season, proved its worth against Houston. The Creighton bench outscored the Houston bench 38-16. Freshman guard Marissa Janning scored 15 of Creightonβs bench points.Β Janning has scored 53 points and shot 19-38 during Creightonβs current three-game winning streak. Every bench player for Creighton scored.
With the victory, Creighton extended its winning streak to three. The Bluejays defeated No. 25 University of Nebraska on Wednesday 66-57. The previous week, Creighton defeated Brigham Young University in overtime.
Creighton will look to win it fourth straight when it heads home to face North Dakota State University on Sunday, Dec. 16. Tipoff at D.J. Sokol Arena is set for 2:05 p.m.
