If you drove down 13thΒ Street on Wednesday night you probably saw the sidewalk crowded with people jumping up and down. Whether they were jumping due to excitement, as an attempt to ward off frostbite or simply were impatient, everybody in that line was there for the same thing: to see hip-hop artist Macklemore live in concert.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis played a show at Sokol Underground Wednesday night at 9. Impressive opening acts by Xperience and Dee-1 got the sold out crowd riled up for the main act. Many enthusiastic fans showed up robed in fur jackets like the one that Macklemore wore during the filming of his music video for the hit song βThrift Store.β One fan will even get to brag about the fact that Macklemore wore his jacket while performing the song.
Picking out highlights of this show is an impossible task. The entire night was exhilarating and lively.Β However, among all the excitement probably most memorable scene for many audience members was the marriage proposal that took place on stage mid-concert.
Omaha native Danielle Powell asked her girlfriend Michelle Rogers to marry her in front of everyone in the auditorium with Macklemore looking on. Through the cheering, the audience was able to make out a βyesβ which started a whole new round of fervent applause.
The historical moment for Powell and Rogers piggybacked on a historical moment for many hip-hop fans. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released the song βSame Loveβ in July of this year to show their support for same-sex marriage rights. It was after hearing this song live that the lesbian couple was able to announce their engagement in front of an overwhelmingly supportive audience.
This happened towards the beginning of the concert and the energy only increased throughout the night. Macklemore as well as multiple fans had their crowd surfing dreams realized. Video clips, lasers, confetti and the erratic dance moves of Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and other musicians added an exciting visual aspect to the show.
Since Creighton students were very well represented in the audience Iβm sure that many of you reading this got to experience it all firsthand. Those of you who werenβt able to make it should definitely try to attend a concert in the future. This show was a prime example that you never know what could happen at a concert in Omaha.
