Oscar ‘Best Picture’ predictions

On Feb. 24, Seth Macfarlane will host the 85th annual Academy Awards held at the Hollywood and Highland Center.

The yearly event creates both anticipation and excitement as critics and audiences alike make their predictions. Awards range from Best Actor or Actress in a Leading Role, to Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. But, at the end of the event, the most coveted award is, of course, Best Picture.

This year’s official nominees are as follows: “Amour,” “Argo,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Django Unchained,” “Les Misérables,” “Life of Pi,” “Lincoln,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” and “Zero Dark Thirty.” These are the top five predictions, thoughts and opinions included, according to Creighton students:

“LINCOLN” 4 1/2 Stars

“I would give Lincoln three stars. I personally do not take interest in many historical events, but this movie was intriguing and well written,” Arts & Sciences sophomore Maggie Miller said.

“SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK” 4 1/2 Stars

“I would agree with the critics rating of four-and-a-half stars. I really enjoyed watching this movie because it wasn’t a typical cliché or predictable film. Plus, I think that Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence were the perfect actors for the roles,” Arts & Science sophomore Kayce Vaverek said.

“ARGO” 4 1/2 Stars

“Argo was an outstanding movie with great directing and cinematography. It was suspenseful and I was at the edge of my seat the entire movie. I would see it again, and I give it five stars, 100 percent,” Nursing sophomore Kendall Ramey said.

“LIFE OF PI” 4 Stars

“I saw this movie and at first wasn’t sure if it would be good or not. Majority of the movie takes place while Pi was on the boat, but the movie flowed because of the amazing stories he told. Overall, I would give this movie three stars, but wouldn’t see it again,” Nursing sophomore Danny Allen said.

“LES MISÉRABLES” 3 1/2 Stars

“What I love about this movie is that when they sing, it is sung live and not recorded. It surprised me that these famous actors could sing so well. I had seen the old movie and it was hard to follow but I had an easy time with this one. I went to it twice and cried even harder the second time. I give it five stars,” Nursing sophomore MaryKate Lawler said.

At the end of the day, popular vote leans toward Lincoln taking the Best Picture Award, but all will be revealed in time. Watch the Academy awards Feb. 24 on ABC at 5 p.m. and see if your favorites are winners.
