‘The Call’ keeps audience on edge

Although it is not its first week appearing in theaters, β€œThe Call” is attracting audiences, day and night, as if it were.

This film, starring Halle Berry, Evie Thompson and Abigail Breslin, is a suspenseful thriller that is bound to keep viewers on the edge of their seat, occasionally covering their eyes and experiencing the intense pounding of their hearts that often comes with thriller movies.

This movie is centered on Halle Berry’s character, a veteran 911 operator who receives a call from an abducted teenage girl. One would expect that, like many other suspenseful movies, there would be a sense of predictability in the plot. However this is not the case in β€œThe Call,” as Berry is forced to confront a killer from her past in order to save the girl’s life.

According to NPR, β€œThe near-real-time cat-and-mouse that follows is the film’s strongest portion, as police try to track down the moving target of Casey (Breslin) and her captor while Jordan (Berry) feeds Casey instructions designed to get other cars to notice that she’s trapped in the trunk.”

The film not only serves as entertainment, but also allows an insight into the lives of the people on the other end of emergency calls and the split decisions made by these messengers of help. Berry’s character is emotionally scarred from an emergency call she had received years earlier, but is determined to not let her fear stand in the way of saving the young girl’s life, as she must think on her feet to give the girl instructions to leave a trail of clues that police could follow.

β€œThe ending was the most surprising part,” Business sophomore Rachel Zaborowski said. β€œIt was a quality production that kept me entertained from beginning to end.”

A possible unintended consequence of the movie is to leave viewers more aware of their surroundings.

β€œI don’t want to give anything away,” Arts & Sciences sophomore Jenny Rehan said, β€œbut I would not recommend this movie to people with children.Β  It will make them even more concerned on the whereabouts of their kids than they already are.”

So for viewers who enjoy the suspense, but not gore, offered by thriller films, check out β€œThe Call,” showing at all Omaha theaters.
