Monster dash gets spooky

Zombies, villains, ghosts and monsters; you see a group of these running in unison late at night.

Your first instinct might be to run away from them. Maybe your scream for help. The last thing you would be expected to do is to run alongside the demons, right?

The Creighton IM sports team hoped to crush this stereotype with their first annual Monster Dash on Sept. 13th.

In this β€œMonster Dash,” participants were encouraged to dress up like their favorite scary Halloween characters. It was a scary good time and according to IM supervisor Dan Renfro, the costumes varied, in both number and style.

β€œZombies were the most common,” Renfro said. β€œThere was also a bear and a shirtless batman. The most interesting was somebody dressed in all black, including a shirt over his face for the entire race.”

The idea for this event, Renfro said, was dreamed up by himself and fellow IM supervisors after the success of their β€œGlow Run” 5K last year.

β€œLast year we did a glow stick fun run which was pretty successful,” Renfro said. β€œThis year we decided to change it up a bit and implement some obstacles. With it being

Friday the 13th, we thought a monster theme would go well.”

Though the numbers may not have been as high as they would have hoped, nearly 100 students took to the streets on Friday night to show off their ghastly costumes and get a good workout in the process.

Those who braved the night were rewarded with sustenance in the form of water and fresh fruit at midnight after the race was over. In the future, the IM staff would love for this event to continue. It’s an event on campus where the runners can run and the monsters can show their teeth.

β€œEveryone seemed to have a great time,” IM supervisor Wes Dempsey said. β€œI see it continuing many years after we have graduated.”

Although no tentative plan to continue the event has been formed at this point, both IM supervisors and students alike agree that this kind of event is good for campus in many ways and they hope it continues in the future.

β€œI had a great time at the monster dash,” said Arts & Sciences senior Ben Olsen said. β€œI would love to do it again.”

After the success of both the Glow Stick Fun Run and the Monster Dash 5K runs, the Creighton Campus Recreation department has plenty in store for next year and many years to come.
