While the weather outside may still require hats and gloves, the Summer Preview 2014 executive team is already looking forward to the hot couple of weeks devoted to helping new Creighton students adjust to Bluejay life this June.
Beginning college can be a challenging switch for some new students. According to Creightonβs new student orientation webpage, the objective of Creightonβs Summer Preview program is to help incoming undergraduates and their families feel more comfortable about their transition to Creightonβs lifestyle.
Co-coordinator Laura Novotny believes the program is just the thing to relieve this feeling of uneasiness.
βWe hope incoming students can get a good feel for what is coming in their first semester at Creighton,β she said.
With planning that started back in September, Novotny and the rest of the Summer Preview executive team look to revamp this yearβs new student orientation by focusing a large part of the program on student involvement sessions and adding more of a crossover with Welcome Week.
By incorporating even more participation from faculty, staff, current students and the Jesuit community this year, Murphy Dowd, co-coordinator alongside Novotny, hopes that new students will gain experiences that leave them excited for their futures at Creighton.Β
Another new aspect to Summer Preview this year will focus on life outside of the classroom. New students will be able to speak with upperclassmen about what kind of student organizations are available, what they do in their free time, and get a feel for the general routines of those who are part of Creightonβs community.
As always, Summer Preview and Welcome Week would not be possible without students excited to share their personal experiences and welcome new students wholeheartedly into the Creighton community.
Current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are encouraged to apply to become guides. The executive team is looking for a diverse group of individuals that embody Creightonβs undergraduate population and genuinely cares about the incoming students.
Dowd encouraged all students to apply.
βWe want guides that earnestly love being a Bluejay, and want to share that passion with the future of Creighton!β she said.
Those interested can apply through the CUInvolved website under the βNew Student Orientationβ tab. Applications are due Feb. 5.Β
