TCBY lacks transformation

For me, TCBY frozen yogurt represents my childhood.

My best friend in grade school and I used to go to TCBY with our parents after a game of laser tag. When we went on a family vacation, my dad surprised me by taking me to a TCBY he’d found ahead of time. My parents always took me to TCBY when I was feeling sick – my mom even took me there when I got dumped by my high school boyfriend (good times).

TCBY was, at least I’m pretty sure, the first real fro-yo place in the country – maybe that’s why it stands for β€œThe Country’s Best Yogurt.” Over the past year, I heard rumors that it made a complete turnaround, most likely to keep up with competitors like Red Mango and Orange Leaf. Therefore, when it was time to visit TCBY on my weekly frozen yogurt adventure, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I first visited the closest TCBY to Creighton’s campus on 76th and Dodge, which is connected to a Subway. TCBY didn’t have the β€œnew look” I had heard about– it looked exactly how I remembered it from the last time I went, aka the night my high school boyfriend dumped me. There were four flavor choices and the same toppings they had nearly four years ago.

I was super confused and asked one of the workers about the changes TCBY supposedly made, only to find out that this location hadn’t exactly gotten the upgrade, maybe because it was connected to a sandwich place. She informed me of a few other TCBYs in Omaha that had the new look, which is similar to that of other frozen yogurt places (sample cups, add your own toppings, etc).

A little annoyed that I didn’t hit the right location, I got some chocolate frozen yogurt with rainbow sprinkles anyway. As I took my first bite, I instantly felt 10 years old. I was brought back to several great childhood memories, as well as the memory of my devastating high school break-up (if you couldn’t tell, it was pretty dramatic). Either way, it tasted great, and I got a good amount of yogurt for only $2.50.

Yes, this review isn’t exactly what I hoped it would be (or maybe what you hoped it would be), but I didn’t have a terrible experience, and now my readers have a little bit of background history on what the β€œold” TCBY means to me. Next week, I’m going to check out one of the other TCBY locations in Omaha. The β€œold” TCBY isn’t a bad TCBY, but I’m excited to see what the updated one has in store.

Shymanski visited TCBY on 76th and Dodge this week.Β  Although the other TCBY in Omaha has a new look, this one looked the same on Shymanski’s last visit.
